About the Gators

Gators Swim Team Organization
The Gator Swim team is a non-profit, sanctioned USA Swimming club and competes in USA swim meets. Practices are held at the Sky View High School swimming pool.

Gators Swim Team Organization
The Logan Aquatics Club began over 25 years ago to provide an opportunity for children
to develop their abilities in swimming, learn to work hard and challenge themselves, and to encourage personal fitness. We are known as the GATORS Swim Team. Our club code is LGST.

We are one of about 30 clubs in the Utah Swimming LSC, which is a part of USA Swimming. A Board of Directors governs us with positions filled by parent volunteers. We are a 501-(c)3 nonprofit organization, which means we rely on monthly dues, fundraisers, contributions, and donations. There is a yearly $67 registration fee per swimmer.

The team is made up of swimmers of all abilities, talents, and ages. Swimmers are divided into three main groups:

Pre-comp: This is the pre-competition group on our team. These swimmers are generally
transitioning from swim lessons to the competitive team. They need to have an understanding of the four strokes, and enough endurance to handle the practice necessary to get them to the intermediate group. This group practices 4:30-5:00 M-F. It is suggested that swimmers come at least 3 days a week in order to progress. The swimmer will improve at his/her own pace. When a swimmer is ready to move on to the intermediate group their coach will recommend them to the intermediate coach who will watch them swim and give final confirmation to move to the intermediate team. The pre-comp generally do not compete at meets other than the quarterly intra-squad meets with just the GATOR team.

Intermediate Team: This is usually our largest group. We have swimmers from 6-14 years of age and many different skill levels. These swimmers are ready and are encouraged to participate in meets. We have the intermediate group practice Monday through Friday 5:00-6:00.  Some swimmers attend 3 days a week and others up to 5 days a week. This group spends a lot of time building endurance and working on technique. When a swimmer is ready to move on to the advanced group their coach recommends them to the head coach who watches them swim.

Advanced Team: This group also has swimmers of all ages. These swimmers generally have strong endurance, good technique, a desire to work hard and a dedication to swim longer practices.  They swim 4:30-6:00 Monday through Friday. Some will swim 3 days a week and others will do up to 5 days a week. These swimmers generally will participate in the early morning swim session offered during the summer as well. This group is strongly encouraged to participate in meets. Competition really improves their times and confidence.

Volunteer Opportunities
The Gators Swim Team is a non-profit, parent-run swim team.  Therefore, we must ask that parents of swimmers to volunteer in some capacity to help the team.  Our monthly dues and fundraisers allow us to keep our dues reasonable.

We have a great group of parents who put in varying amounts of time to help support the team. There are many opportunities to help.  When a parent signs up for a volunteer position for the year, we anticipate that the parent will fulfill the expectations for the position. Effective February 1, 2015, your swimmer’s account will be credited $5 each month for your volunteer time.  We have a master volunteer spreadsheet that parents can select positions on (first come, first served).

All parents who have a swimmer (or swimmers) signed-up for a meet that is hosted by the Gators (inter squads, dual meets, Fall Developmental, Spring Ball, and Bridgerland Open) are asked to help at those meets in some way.

Effective February 1, 2015 the meet entry fees for these meets will be increased by $10 per swimmer.  If a parent volunteers at the swim meet (or receives an exception for that meet from the Parent Board) they will receive a $10 credit for each swimmer on their entry fees after the meet.  Volunteers must sign-in at the meet in order to receive their credit.  Meet volunteer positions will be emailed to those families with swimmers signed up for events in the meet.

Only one parent/family member per family is required to volunteer to receive credit for all your swimmers.

What can we expect from practices?
Practices change daily. There is a warm-up phase during the first 10-15 minutes. It is very
important that swimmers are on time so they can get their full warm-up. Endurance and
technique are worked on at almost every practice. There is also a cool-down and then the swimmers are expected to help clean up the pool area. Clean-up consists of taking down the flags, rolling up the lane lines, picking up kick boards and other equipment used by the team. All swimmers are expected to help and follow assignments as given by the coach.  “Perfect practice makes perfect performance”. Use this time wisely!

Swimmer’s responsibilities:
  • Come to practice regularly and bring a great attitude.
  • Arrive at the pool 10 minutes early to get dressed and be ready to go on time.
  • Come in your proper swim attire and don’t forget your goggles and cap.
  • Bring a water bottle.
  • Listen to the coach. The pool tends to get noisy with all the swimmers, so when the coach is giving instructions make sure you are quiet and turned to face the coach.
  • Don’t dive under the water while instructions are being given.
  • Do not play on the lane lines.
  • Pay attention during practice and do not distract your fellow teammates.
  • Stay and help clean up after practice.
  • Do not leave any of your gear poolside or in the locker room.
  • Be willing to push yourself and try something new. That is how you improve.

Parent’s responsibilities:
  • Get your swimmer to practice on time (10 minutes early). This is one of the biggest
  • challenges for the coaches.
  • Help your swimmer remember all of their swim gear.
  • If you are available, come and watch your swimmer practice.
  • Encourage and support your swimmer.
  • If you need to talk to the coach please do so before or after practice, not during. You can also email them through logangators@gmail.com
  • Establish a communication with your child’s coach. This will help the coach to better know how to meet your child’s needs and will help them meet their goals.
  • Sign up for a volunteer position for the year then fulfill the expectations of the position.
  • Attend parent/board meetings when possible to give your input.
  • Attend and help at meets. Cheer on your swimmers.
  • Remain current on your GATOR dues.

Coaches responsibilities:
  • Come prepared to practice with workouts tailored to their groups. The coaches may have up to three different workouts going on in one practice. They set up workouts based on the swimmer’s abilities and goals.
  • Keep track of swimmer’s improvements and progress.
  • Manage the safety at the pool during practice time.
  • Get to know swimmers.
  • Help set goals with the swimmers.
  • Attend and direct swimmers at the meets.
  • Attend meetings, classes, get certifications, and study to provide the best training possible for the GATOR swimmers.
